Worth The Hype? Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay

With over 26,000 reviews on amazon, this mask is beloved to say the least. Yet there will be some cases where it won’t work for some people due to factors like skin type and how they make the mask. I remember the first few times I made the mask, it was messy and frustrating. Once I figured it out, it became one of my favorite masks, especially because it’s super budget friendly!

Claims: On Amazon’s website, the company claims,

Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay contains 100% Pure Calcium Bentonite Clay, which has been used for centuries to beautify and refresh when used as a facial or body mask. Cleopatra used clay from the Nile River and the Arabian Desert over 1800 years ago, as part of her beauty ritual. German and roman spas have been using clay packs and treatments in the spas they built 4,000 years ago. Many of these spas still exist and use clay even today. Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay is calcium bentonite clay harvested from Death Valley, California, where it is sun-dried for up to six months in temperatures that sometimes reach 134 degrees. There are so many uses for our clay: Facials, acne, body wraps, clay baths, foot soaks, chilled clay for knee packs and insect bites. Enjoy the benefits of clay in your own home. Beautify and refresh.”

I primarily use this for my large pores and breakouts because of the calcium bentonite clay. I’ve never used it for a foot soak or for a clay bath but given how intense it is on the face, I’m sure it would tighten and smoothen the skin.

Ingredients:

100% natural calcium bentonite (green) clay.

Yup, that’s it. That means that you’re getting an intense dosage of vitamins and minerals while detoxifying the skin/ Technically, the ingredients will also include water and/or apple cider vinegar as you will need to mix the liquids and the powder mask. If you decide to use apple cider vinegar, you will be getting extra antibacterial and antifungal properties that are super great for acne. With this mask, there’s no BS. That’s a plus for me!

Price: 1 lb of powder (essentially 2 pounds of mask total after you add liquid)

Amazon: $9.99 (Free shipping on orders over $25)

Target: $7.99 (No free shipping)

Walgreens: $7.99 (Free shipping on orders over $35)

**If you know you’re going to love this mask, I would go for the 2 pound version. It’s even more budget friendly than the 1 pound, averaging at about $15.

The Run-Down:

For a full face, I like to get a small cup, mix in about a tablespoon of powder with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Then I use a flat brush that almost looks like a paintbrush with a really short handle to blend and apply the mask. One of those silicon mask brushed should work perfectly as well. I did hear that the only material you should not use is plastic. Plastic will not blend or apply the mask well. Apply a thin layer that isn’t transclucent but is not thick. If you apply a thick layer, the clay will never dry and the mask will be ineffective. First, I must tell you that putting apple cider vinegar is bound to be smelly. Second, once the mask begins to dry, your face will tighten like nobody’s business and you won’t be able to talk. After about 15-20 minutes, I’ll wash off this mask and my skin will be bright red. Do not panic, as it should fade after 30 minutes or so. Immediately after washing, put on moisturizer.

If your skin is sensitive or super dry, I would really recommend diluting the apple cider vinegar with water, or just going with water. If you only want to use this as an acne treatment, I like to make a small amount and use it as a spot treatment for the night. This way, the face doesn’t have to go through the intense masking process every night. I actually love using it this way because of its effectiveness. After leaving it on overnight, the pimple will be significantly reduced.

Pros and Cons:

PROS

  • Budget friendly
  • Effective

CONS

  • Not as convenient as pre made masks
  • Apple cider vinegar is very smelly

Who Should Use:

Anyone with oily skin, big pores, or acne. I really think this mask is great for tightening the pores and really cleansing the skin. The apple cider vinegar and bentonite clay combination  is a game changer for my acne.

That’s right. For me this is a holy grail. If you follow my blog, you know these really don’t come often. Not only is this product effective and one of a kind, it’s also budget friendly. You really don’t get that combination that often.

    1. Yeah of course! Although like I said in the review, If you do end up purchasing this, I’d recommend you to be careful with the apple cider vinegar because it’s pretty strong, and you have dry skin right? Thanks for reading The Empties Diaries!
